0-12 Months
At this age they are unaware of numbers, but are developing the foundations of mathematics and counting at a prolific rate.
Simply playing with your infant child using a variety of everyday objects is the best way to introduce them to the concepts they need. Using number words is a great way for them to start recognising that numbers exist. You can simply count, use numbers in the normal way, or my favourite, sing number songs.

1-2 Years
Between the age of 1-2 years, children begin to start naming groups of objects. Sometimes they use the wrong number, but don't be worried, this is a healthy and natural thing for kids to do. Around this age it is great to start pointing or showing small groups of objects and saying, "Here are two shoes" or "Look, three spoons". Start asking them how many there are. If you like you can arrange the same three objects in different patterns and ask them how many?. That's a great way for kids to start identifying that three things are "three" no matter how they are arranged.
When my daughter was around two we enjoyed rolling dice. I would roll it, say the number and we would applaud. Then I'd write the number down. She thought it was great. I loved it because she was installing the fundamentals of subitising, while belly-laughing and having a rollicking fun time!

Wascal Worm
Print out the PDF of Wascal Worm below.
Start by making a pile of objects, e.g. counters, pistachios, sultanas. Have your child find the right amount of objects to place in each group of seeds.
First off, start by saying "Put three sultanas in the first group". Then as they build confidence, simply ask them to "Put the seeds in the first group".
